Preface

 

In 2004 Cannon had a birth injury that led to a diagnosis of spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy. When he was seven years old Ms. Beth, a retired art teacher, began working with him. By adapting art making methods, materials and equipment, she was able to help him find and nurture his creative spirit. He has, over the years found his vocation as an artist.  He continues on this path with a new instructor/facilitator. The following, documents the first eight years of his journey in art making.  It is our hope that his experiences will be of use to others who are on their own quest to create.

Introductions

 

The Journey Begins

Our journey started when Cannon took my hand.  We were leaving the cafeteria following our  a getting acquainted meeting at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. As we left, he reached out his right hand and took my hand. With his left hand he operated the controls of his mobility chair.

We traveled in the elevator to the second floor and he continued to hold my hand as we cruised by my old friends, he would pause a few seconds in front of each and then was off to the next work of art - the Impressionists and the Post-impressionist, that I had first met as a girl about the same age as Cannon. Renoir, Degas, Cassatt, Monet, Van Gogh, Seurat, Matisse.

I was hoping they would inspire him as much as they had inspired me, for we were setting out on a path of discovery. Cannon was 7 and I was 65 and we were on the brink of an adventure.

It would require a stretching and strengthening of body and brain muscles for both of us. But it would all be coated in laughter and joyfulness.
