Ghost Boys

Cannon has a school assignment that gives him the opportunity to use his art making skills.  In addition to a written report, his teacher gave the students several ways to further communicate their reflections on the story. Ghost Boys by Jewell Parker Rhodes.

Cannon chose to illustrate the following passage from the opening chapter of the book.

“How small I look…laid out flat, my stomach touching ground.  My right knee bent and my brand-new Nikes stained with blood.” 

Another passage included a description of the dark night sky. 

Using his paint roller and acrylic paints, Cannon filled his canvas with   black and then added     blue and some touches of white representing both the night sky and the flecks in the asphalt.     When dry he added a pool of red with his brush and then tilted the canvas to allow the color to flow away from the central puddle. 

The result was this powerful image of the powerful words from the book.
